The Early Mass by Adam Hanover

Waking on the front lawn

after a night of revelry,

reeking of Cutty Sark and hot sauce,

I struggle to one knee, genuflecting

at the altar of the big oak.

To my right, morning dew collects

in the inverted caps of wild mushrooms:

holy water in a church vestibule.

Adam Hanover lives and works in Boston Mass. He holds an MA from the University at Buffalo and an MFA from Emerson College.
