Vacuity by Tom Snarsky

Empty, but tense. I lifted
the idea “art is shelter”
from somebody with limpid
bones. There’s no manic edge
to draw back from, no great
systematic doubt to heave
through the windshieldI
lost the wherewithal to call
it a beautiful moon, spongy
& fair. The attention I have
spent on this is like garbage
slinking through a river of milk.
The long, pedestrian sigh vers-
us an anagram of dreaming.

Tom Snarsky teaches mathematics at Malden High School in Malden, Massachusetts, USA.
