The Ground Must Be Warm by Anna Serio

today
the birds are flying
dangerously close
their wings are stabbing the air
humming:

forget the infrastructure
the constant moving
like an upward wave

the real world
is a mountainscape
or a surgeon’s stadium

and nothing is more boring
than the miracle of flight

the ground must be warm

the mist hugs the sidewalk
the way it does in April

but the drivers honk dumbly
into the shallow cave

of the sky
